Note

This compound represents an internal segment of a peptidoglycan polymer (meso-diaminopimelate containing). It contains an L,D (or 3 →3) cross link formed between the L-centre of meso-DAP of a peptide on one glycan chain to the D-centre of meso-DAP from a separate glycan chain. The R groups represent glycan chains of β1,4-linked N-acetylglucosamine and N-acetylmuramic acid residues with peptide stems of varying length (penta-, tetra- and tripeptide) - some of which may be involved in cross-links with other glycan strands.3 →3 cross-links are formed by L,D-transpeptidases. They are present in low abundance in |FRAME: TAX-562| although their proportion increases in stationary phase and under some stress conditions. Hydrolysis of cross-links is important for both peptidoglycan expansion and recycling, and is catalysed by endopeptidases of varying specificity (see |CITS: [18266855]|).
